Dr Alexander Parkyn-Smith

Visual Anthropologist
Alexander is a visual anthropologist with regional expertise in Central Asia and Kazakhstan. He brings together an academic background in Anthropology with a strong artistic and technical skillset using photography and film as tools for the public communication of ideas and research. He is a founding member of Myriad Film & Research.

He completed his doctoral research (PhD Durham University, UK) on the topic of narratives of uncertainty and risk among the young urban middle class in Almaty, Kazakhstan. He also holds an MA in Visual Anthropology (Goldsmiths, University of London, UK).

Alexander has worked with UNESCAP and UNDRR in Central Asia. The Ministry of Justice and Department for Education in the UK Government and numerous academic research projects on the topics of disaster risk and water-level management and is currently working with NURCE on their projects focussed on women entrepreneurs in Central Asia.
